BBN Communications, a subsidiary or BBN, was created in 1983 to build the communications infrastructures for major commercial customer networks, including MasterCard and MCI, as well as to serve its government and defense customers. BBN was sold in 1997 to GTE. BBN was a pioneer in the discovery and implementation of a vast number of the Internet's core components.
