We actively contribute to the long-term development of Romanian society through education and promoting a strong culture of reading among children. Our main goals are: • To encourage the formation of strong reading habits among children and young people in Romania; • To decrease illiteracy and increase fluency rate among children and young people in Romania; • To facilitate access to books through book donations for children in low-income families, with relatives working abroad, all around the country. Context: • Almost 50% of high-school attendees fail the annual national examination. • Romania is last in the European Union regarding the average number of books read per capita; • More than half of all Romanian citizens (53.3%) have difficulties understanding written text, putting us in last place among European States. • Romania is one of the few countries in the European Union that does not offer adequate reading programs for children who fall under literacy standards. • According to official statistics, 82,339 children in Romania have the parents working abroad (June 10th 2015 data). • Starting with the 3rd grade, children stop learning to read and start reading to learn. After this point, children who fall behind in reading are very likely to encounter lifelong problems in learning new skills. We believe that we are, all of us, responsible for what become of future generations if today’s children stop reading. Help us share more books in the areas needed across the country!
