In May 2021, Nicholas became critically ill with COVID. He spent 241 days on ECMO life support and eleven months in three hospitals before receiving a double lung transplant from a sixteen-year-old donor. Then came months of relearning how to walk. The book tells the story from both sides of the hospital bed: Nicholas as the patient and Maureen as his caregiver.
