Youth Outside Information

Youth Outside works to ensure that the lived experience of all youth is honored as part of the outdoor experience. We provide grantmaking, capacity building and training to promote healthy lives and inspire future champions of the planet. Since 2013, Youth Outside has provided meaningful outdoor experiences for over 15,000 underrepresented youth from northern and central California, over 82% of which are youth of color. We want to achieve a 100% increase in the amount of time that California youth spend outside—from under 30 minutes per day to an average one hour per day—to improve their physical, mental and emotional health. Currently, children in the U.S. spend an alarming 90% of their time indoors. Youth Outside is committed to increasing physical activity and wellness for underrepresented youth through access to the outdoors. When young people are meaningfully engaged in outdoor programs, they develop a lasting appreciation of nature and become more likely to protect our vital natural resources.
