The work undertaken by our research staff and research students is not only enriching our courses, it is literally shaping the world. In the Research Excellence Framework 2014, which measures universities’ research performance, 90% of Birmingham City University’s total submission was judged to have delivered ‘outstanding’ or ‘very considerable’ impact externally. We have been pioneering vocational education in the city since 1843, through a series of predecessor institutions. Having achieved University status in 1992, we changed our name to Birmingham City University in 2007, reflecting our commitment to, and pride in, our home city.

Our mission is to increase the public’s enjoyment and understanding of art. When Tate first opened its doors to the public in 1897 it had just one gallery, displaying a small collection of British artworks. Today we have four major galleries and the national collection of British art from 1500 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art, which includes nearly 80,000 artworks. Tate is a public institution owned by, and existing for, the public.

Named after Barbara Hepworth, one of the most important artists of the 20th century who was born and brought up in Wakefield, we present major exhibitions of the best international modern and contemporary art and have dedicated galleries exploring Hepworth’s art and working process. We are also home to Wakefield’s art collection and are one of the founding partners of Yorkshire Sculpture International. Designed by David Chipperfield Architects, our ten superb gallery spaces make us one of the UK’s largest purpose-built galleries outside London.
