The Wynyard Edge Alliance has been formed to develop the infrastructure required to support the 36th America’s Cup event at Auckland in 2020/2021, along with other associated works in the downtown Auckland area. The work is funded by Auckland Council and central government, both of which are also Wynyard Edge Alliance owner participants, represented in the governance of the Alliance by Auckland Council, Panuku Devlopment Auckland and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). The Alliance’s non-owner participants are constructors Downer and McConnell Dowell and designers Beca and Tonkin + Taylor. The project As well as delivering a stage for the race and associated events, the infrastructure project is aimed at leaving a waterfront destination that is loved by both New Zealanders and visitors alike. We want to create a legacy for Tāmaki Makaurau that lasts beyond a single sporting event. The project will design and provide platforms for up to seven syndicate bases, four of which are double bases. In addition, up to 80 superyachts are expected to be moored at the Cup village. Emirates Team New Zealand will be using the Viaduct Events Centre on Halsey Wharf as its base and converting this themselves. East of the Halsey Wharf, Hobson Wharf is being extended to accommodate a challenger base. On the other side of Halsey, tank farms on Wynyard Point - formerly operated by Stolthaven and BST Terminals - are being removed. The platforms will be used for up to five team bases.
