Founded in 1994, Wynd Communications created an innovative, first-of-its-kind wireless, mobile email service called WyndMail designed for on-the-go individuals. WyndMail utilized nationwide narrowband packet data networks, forging partnerships with Apple, Hewlett Packard and US Robotics. In 1997, Wynd expanded its technology to meet deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals’ mobile communications needs that the deaf community embraced this service, proving it highly-valuable and life changing. Wynd was the first in the nation to provide a wireless TTY call over packet data networks and in 1998, the company shifted its strategy to focus on providing communications services exclusively for deaf and hard of hearing individuals, including a partnership with the American Automobile Association (AAA), providing emergency roadside support services. Wynd was recognized by the White House for innovation for people with disabilities and won the California Governors Technology Award for accessible communications. In 2000, after establishing itself as a market leader and innovator of communications for deaf and hard-of-hearing people, Wynd was acquired by GoAmerica, Inc (NASDAQ: GOAM), a Hackensack, NJ based provider of wireless Internet and data services that later became Purple Communications, Inc., a leading provider of communications services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
