Its geographic area additionally comprises 12 district councils, and around 300 town and parish councils. The county council has 84 elected councillors. Ashford Borough Council is a local authority which provides services to residents in Ashford, Tenterden and a large network of surrounding villages. Our services include keeping the streets clean and collecting rubbish, renting out social housing (council houses and flats), providing leisure facilities and play areas and processing council tax and housing benefits. We deal with local planning applications for everything from a conservatory to major developments, and if you are buying a home in the borough we can provide you with a comprehensive land search service. We issue licenses for taxis and licensed premises, look after parks and open spaces, and parking around the borough. Our offices are based in International House. Our customer services team are based at International House and we have a further office in Manor Row, Tenterden. In all we employ around 415 people. Our achievements have been recognised by the Government with the receipt of two Beacon Awards for excellence and innovation since 2005, the most recent for promoting sustainable communities through the planning process. The council is only one of four local authorities nationally to be given this award.

Canterbury City Council is the district council for Canterbury, Herne Bay, Whitstable and 24 surrounding villages. Looking after the local area and the people who make it special is at the heart of what we do, delivering more than 70 services to residents, businesses and visitors. The council is formed of 39 councillors, who are elected by local residents to represent them in making decisions about how the district is governed. Councillors work closely with council staff to implement those decisions and deliver services. Services include waste collection, planning, housing, culture and leisure facilities, open spaces, parking, street cleaning and regulatory functions such as environmental health, licensing, council tax and business rate collection. Kent County Council delivers some services to our district and these are education, highways, social services, recycling centres and libraries. Kent Police and the Fire and Rescue Service work with us in partnerships such as the Community Safety Unit who deal with anti-social behaviour and crime prevention.
