Worthington Youth Boosters offers a select soccer program as part of it's overall soccer program for the community of Worthington. A select soccer program differs from a recreation program in a few ways. In the WYB select soccer program the players are selected for the teams and go through a try out process in late May and early June. Players that accept the offered positions on the team must give a one year commitment to the select team. The WYB recreation program offers a spot to every Worthington resident that wants to play soccer and they are placed on teams with friends and classmates and there is not a try out process involved. Recreation players only need to give a commitment for one soccer season as opposed to two soccer seasons with the select teams. Recreation teams are parent coached and soccer training for the players can vary from team to team based on the knowledge and experience of the parent coach that has volunteered to coach the team. Select teams have professional coaches that are paid to train and coach the select teams and the training for the select teams is in most cases at a much higher level than the recreation teams. Select teams train on average twice a week and have two games a week. Recreation teams train on average once a week and have one to two games a week depending on the recreation league. Soccer Tots and Recreation play one game a week and GOYSL and MSSA play two games a week. The select teams have away games but they are no further away than the away games that the GOYSL and MSSA teams play for their away games. When comparing the select program to the GOYSL and MSSA program the biggest differences are that the select program plays in a league (MOSSL) that is generally much more competitive with generally a much higher skill level than the GOYSL and MSSA level. The league that the select program plays in is called Mid Ohio Select Soccer League (MOSSL) and it has leagues for boys and girls ages U-9 through U-18. The other big difference is the cost. Since the select program has paid soccer professionals training and coaching the teams, the cost to be on a select soccer team is more than the cost to be on a volunteer parent coached team for GOYSL or MSSA. However, since the WYB select program is part of a non-profit organization (WYB) and all the administrative work for the program is done by volunteers, the costs of the WYB select program is one of the lowest costs for any select program in Central Ohio. So if your child is ready for a select soccer program, we encourage you to consider the WYB select soccer program where you can get some of the finest soccer training in Columbus at a reasonable cost and train and play home games in Worthington.
