Works by Women Information

Works by Women seeks to support theatrical work written, directed, and designed by women. As an advocacy organization we offer a place for women to advertise their female driven productions (shows must have at least a 50% women identified design team) through our website, newsletter, and social media outlets. We also offer an opportunity for members to get special offers to see female driven theatre on their own and as a group as part of our "play" date program. Through the use of our extensive database on the website of playwrights, directors, and designers we seek to make hiring more women identified creative teams easier and more accessible for people in the theatre. Our website and newsletter act as a tool for both theatre professionals and theatre enthusiasts by offering opportunities to support women in theatre. Under 20% of plays produced on American stages are written or directed by women, and of those most are at the smaller theatres where remuneration is minimal. WORKS BY WOMEN is dedicated to redressing the situation by encouraging theatre-goers to choose to see plays by women, supporting their work and showing producers equity matters to their audiences. WORKS BY WOMEN is an informal/ad hoc group of friends, colleagues, and theatre professionals who go to the theatre whenever possible to see work written, directed and designed by women. Founded by Ludovica Villar-Hauser in the fall of 2009, WORKS BY WOMEN was conceived as a call to action in response to 50/50 in 2020, a grassroots organization dedicated to achieving parity by the 100th anniversary of American suffrage. It’s time. In order to be considered, 50% of the writers, directors, and designers working on the production must be women. Although this has not always been the case with the shows that Works By Women has seen in the past, with our incorporation, we felt it was important to start enforcing our goals more strictly in the work that we support.
