Working Wines was founded with the simple goal of connecting the average consumer with affordable, high-quality wine. Too often, shoppers spend their hard-earned money on poor quality wine, simply because the labels look familiar, or because they’ve convinced themselves that they don’t know “enough” about wine to pick out a good bottle anyway. So, they pick up a cheap bottle from one of the big brands that line grocery store shelves, not realizing that they could get a substantially higher quality wine for the same price or less. This tends to be true because the giant producers featured in grocery stores spend exponentially more money on marketing than smaller and mid-size producers. In turn, shoppers end up subsidizing those marketing budgets (paying for the popular label and the grocery store endcaps) rather than high-quality, thoughtfully made wine when they buy from those producers. This pattern has a compounding negative effect on both the history and the industry of wine. As larger producers buy more land and grapes to support demand for highly commercial wines, many lesser-known grape varieties are pushed toward– or past– the brink of extinction. Likewise, centuries of winemaking tradition across families and communities around the world are gradually erased. All the while, the average consumer remains unaware of these industry shifts and continues to consume those basic, commercial wines, inadvertently perpetuating the issue. By empowering the average shopper to identify and enjoy better wine–beyond the brands they see on billboards– Working Wines aims to bring value to producers and consumers alike.
