WISE – Wallenberg Initiative Material Science for Sustainability Information

A research program to enable sustainable technologies with impact on our society by understanding, creating, and controlling complex materials with a precision down to the single atom level. Our vision is to perform basic and need-driven materials science at the international forefront, to empower sustainable techno- logies with positive impact on society, and to train future leaders in society, industry, and academia in Sweden. WISE promotes a transition towards a sustainable society, while pushing the scientific frontier in materials science to new vistas that establish Sweden as a leading nation in the field. WISE aims to explore and research advanced, functional materials targeting the thematic areas: – Conversion, storage, and distribution of clean energy – Circular materials replacing rare, energy-demanding, and hazardous materials – Mitigation, cleaning, and protection of the atmosphere, soil, and water – Discovery of materials for novel sustainable technologies and applications WISE is primarily based at six of Sweden’s foremost research universities, which together form a complete and complementary knowledge base to successfully execute the core activities in research and education. WISE is a major effort funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and spanning six of Sweden’s leading research universities; Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Linköping University, Lund University, Stockholm University and Uppsala University.
