WireCache was founded in 2001 and is based in Mountain View, California. The company is comprised of a team of highly experienced veterans from RDBMS, transaction processing, data warehousing and server hardware companies, including Sun, Intel, Cray, Oracle, Informix and Sybase. The key observation that led to the creation of the company is that the Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) remains the least scalable piece of enterprise application architecture, and so it continues to act as a performance bottleneck in many applications. While application servers and web servers can be scaled almost without limit, this is not true of the RDBMS. It is tasked with managing the single copy of enterprise data, and for very good data integrity reasons, this usually translates to a single RDBMS instance managing the single copy of the database on a single machine or cluster. When an RDBMS runs out of power for a given application, the ensuing hardware and software upgrade is often onerous, always expensive, disruptive to operations, and laden with risk. Other caching solutions aimed at solving this problem rely on replacing the RDBMS. Uniquely, WireCache augments, rather than replacing the RDBMS.
