Established in 1986 as a resource centre for dance professionals and the public in British Columbia, The Dance Centre is a multifaceted organization offering a range of activities unparalleled in Canadian dance.
Our goal is to support the development of a vibrant dance scene in BC and increase the profile of dance, by providing resources and services for the dance profession; presenting public performances and events; operating one of Canada’s flagship dance facilities; and promoting BC dance.
The Dance Centre is a non-profit organization and a registered charity.
Founded in 1986 by David Y. H. Lui, Jean Orr and Sheila Begg, with Annette av Paul as first Artistic Director, the company has been under the artistic direction of Reid Anderson, Patricia Neary and Barry Ingham, followed by John Alleyne for 17 years and Emily Molnar for 11. As of July 2020, the company is proudly under the directorship of Medhi Walerski.
Ballet BC is an internationally acclaimed collaborative and creation-based contemporary ballet company that is a leader and resource in the creation, production and education of contemporary dance in Canada. Bold and innovative, the Company’s distinctive style and approach has made a unique and valuable national contribution to the development of dance. In 2019, the Company was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production for their tour to Sadler’s Wells in London.
Established in 2002, Ballet Victoria stands as the sole professional ballet company on Vancouver Island. With a dynamic ensemble of a dozen dancers, we deliver four annual productions that blend classic ballets with contemporary pieces, set to an eclectic range of music. Our performances are an alluring blend of entertainment and artistic depth, appealing to audiences of all ages.
Ballet Victoria is dedicated to nurturing emerging dance talent and building a strong connection to dance within our local and global community. We achieve this through professional performances, educational courses, and community outreach programs.
Over the years, we've created nearly a hundred new works, including ten full-length ballets, and have toured extensively across Canada, the USA, and Mexico. Under the leadership of artistic director, Paul Destrooper, Ballet Victoria constantly explores new artistic horizons, inviting you to experience the world of dance with us.
