We are the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, here to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and to promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the area by the public. In pursuing these purposes, we are also required to seek to foster the economic and social well-being of local communities within the National Park.

Harrogate Borough Council covers 500 sq miles of North Yorkshire. Its major population areas are Harrogate, Knaresborough, Pateley Bridge, Masham and the City of Ripon. The council's main areas of responsibility are: revenues and benefits; housing; planning; economic development; sport and leisure facilities; environmental services and public protection.

The North York Moors became a National Park on 28 November 1952 and is one of 15 National Parks in the United Kingdom. We have two main purposes: * to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage; and * to promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of National Parks by the public. If there's a conflict between these two purposes, conservation takes priority. We are also required to seek to foster the economic and social well-being of local communities within the National Park.
