Vacuum Metal Deposition (VMD®) is one of the most powerful latent fingermark development techniques available for a wide range of exhibits, including flexible plastic packaging, plastic bottles, glass, fabrics, firearms, glossy paper, waxed paper, paper banknotes, polymer banknotes, wood, fabrics, etc. The technique employs the deposition of a very thin layer of metal in a vacuum chamber to develop fingermarks often to 3rd level detail. Importantly, research has shown that VMD® has low interference on subsequent DNA recovery, making it the preferred technique for mark development on clothing and other fabric evidence. West Technology currently manufactures three VMD® systems (VMD360, VMD560 and VMD1260), making substantial improvements to size, ease of operation, maintenance and cost.
