Taronga Conservation Society Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that is committed to securing a future for wildlife.
At Taronga Zoo in Sydney and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, we lead conservation efforts in the field and participate in regional and global conservation breeding programs to establish insurance populations for species threatened in the wild. We also operate two wildlife hospitals that treat and rehabilitate injured native wildlife, as well as providing best practice health care for the animals at our Zoos.
Taronga recognises that the planet’s biodiversity and ecosystems are the life support systems for the health and prosperity of all species including our own. At no time in history has this been more evident, with drought, bushfires, climate change, global pandemics, habitat destruction, ocean acidification and many other crises threatening natural systems and our own future.
Whilst we cannot tackle these challenges alone, Taronga is acting now and working to save species, sustain ecosystems, provide experiences and create learning opportunities so that we act together.
Museums Victoria (MV) is responsible for the state's scientific and cultural collections, providing public access through three museums. The organization also oversees a wide range of research programs, the continued development of the state's collections, and run major education and research based websites.
MV is the largest public museums organisation in Australia.
Collections
As the state's museum, MV is responsible for more than 16 million individual items. These objects are organised within two priceless collections - Sciences and Humanities.
Museums
MV operates the Melbourne Museum in Carlton Gardens, Scienceworks and Melbourne Planetarium in Spotswood, and the Immigration Museum in Melbourne's Old Customs House in Flinders Street.
MV is also custodian for the heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building.
History
The National Museum of Victoria, the state's first museum, was established in 1854. In 1870, the Industrial and Technological Museum of Victoria, later known as the Science Museum, was built.
These institutions were amalgamated and Museums Victoria was established in 1983, under the Museums Act.
Zoos Victoria operates four world-class zoos: Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Kyabram Fauna Park.
We aim to become the world leader in zoo-based conservation and are already playing a leading role in advocacy for wildlife and wild places.
As a not for profit organisation, we rely on funding from the state government as well as financial support from the community to provide the very best animal care.
Zoos Victoria is an organisation full of committed staff members from numerous disciplines, working together to fight extinction to save endangered species.
