Koinonia is a state-licensed, non-profit public service organization serving communities across California and Nevada. We exist to bring hope and healing to foster youth and families through meaningful relationships and quality programs and services.
We guide families through the approval process and equip them with the tools they need to care for foster children. We provide in-home support as well as mental health services. The goal is always to reunite the foster children with their family of origin. In some cases, a short-term placement turns into a long-term placement, sometimes taking the path towards adoption. We navigate this process with our families and we also work with parents interested in private adoption.
“Koinonia” (Koy-no-nee’-ah) is a Greek word which means “fellowship.” It carries with it the meaning of a committed, trustworthy and dependable relationship. It is this “koinonia” relationship that has made the difference in the lives of thousands of foster children over the past 40 years.
Since 1948, Family & Children Services of Silicon Valley has been strengthening families and changing lives in our community. Founded to address the growing need for community-based mental health care, FCS's scope of service has expanded over the decades to encompass behavioral health needs essential to individuals' and families' wellness, safety, and self-sufficiency.
As of January 2017, FCS is a division of Caminar (www.caminar.org).
FCS's prevention, treatment, and recovery programs advance our mission: To empower and support individuals and families to move toward resilience, wellness, and independence.
During the last year, more than 11,000 children, teens, and adults participated in our counseling, prevention, and support programs.
The support of our community expands our circle of support, ensuring professional assistance is available during of stress and trauma. We help children and adults cope effectively with depression, addiction, and chronic mental or physical illness. We aid families in overcoming domestic violence, teaching them how to become self-sufficient and build safe, healthy relationships. We counsel and assist our community’s veterans, LGBTQ youth and adults, and young people aged 16-21 as they emerge from the foster care system into independence.
