It is a reflection of the excellent staff, customer service, selection and pricing maintained throughout the last 35 years. Michael's first health food store was in Cortez, Colorado in 1973- Cortez Health Food Center. In April 1982 he opened Vitamin Express in San Francisco, California with 12 shelves of supplements and herb teas. By 1996 Vitamin Express achieved the Bay Guardian's "Best Place to Buy Vitamins in the SF Bay Area". At one time Vitamin Express had five locations; two in San Francisco, Berkeley, Mill Valley and Menlo Park. As Michael's health declined and times changed, he either sold or closed the stores except the original one in San Francisco on Irving Street by Golden Gate Park in the Sunset District. Michael's health continued a downward spiral with great weight loss and energy deprivation. The finest doctors and nutritional approaches were not enough to turn his health around. His illness was soon linked to his sensitivity to electromagnetic fields (EMF) and the environment's increased levels causing a steady decline in his health. Due to the good fortune of a customer's help, he was introduced to a RayGuard product. After several weeks, for the first time, he began to feel relief from his illness. Presently, due to his use of RayGuard, his health and vitality has returned and he has gained back 35 pounds of his weight now at a healthy 175. As a child he had polio, infantile paralysis, which may have increased his sensitivity to EMF's. As a child the Sister Kenny treatment provided recovery without any crippling. Nevertheless, severe leg pain followed any exercise. In 1971 the experience of taking calcium and magnesium powder suggested to him provided quick and complete pain relief, created an appreciation and interest in nutrition that ultimately propelled him into the science of nutrition. Michael was in the US Peace Corps in Ethiopia and Eritrea from 1966 to 1968 teaching science and agriculture.
