Roxane Permar works in response to issues of location, history and community, using a variety of methods and media including film, textiles and social exchange to realise public art projects, events and sculptural installations. Her work often employs creative collaboration, networking and participation as well as gift-giving and exchange. The distinct character of every project arises from the different people and situations she meets in each location. While Roxane is based in the Shetland Islands, she works locally, nationally and internationally. Mirrie Dancers is a large scale collaborative project in progress in Shetland; and she is also developing work for I Vesterveg, a touring exhibition in Scandinavia during 2010. Throughout her career she has always worked in art education; currently part-time on the BA Contemporary Textiles course at Shetland College UHI; as a part-time lecturer at Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design (1980-1994), primarily in Cultural Studies, a Senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University (formerly University of Central England, 1992-1997) as Sculpture Area Coordinator and Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen (1998-2000).
