Versive is developing a new generation of manual wheelchairs that make mobility more efficient, intuitive, and less physically demanding. Founded on research conducted at ETH Zürich, we challenge a fundamental limitation of conventional manual wheelchairs: steering through braking. This decades-old principle forces users to constantly lose momentum and expend significant energy simply to stay on course, contributing to fatigue and long-term strain on the upper body. Our patented Steering-by-Leaning technology replaces braking-based steering with natural upper-body movement. Users steer by shifting their body weight—lean left to turn left, lean right to turn right, and sit upright to travel straight ahead. The result is a more fluid and energy-efficient way of moving, with the potential to reduce physical strain, improve maneuverability, and free one hand for everyday tasks while in motion. At Versive, we combine engineering, movement science, and user-centered design to translate cutting-edge research into meaningful improvements in everyday mobility. Our mission is simple: By replacing friction with flow, we give wheelchair users more freedom, more independence, and more energy for the things that matter most. Versive — A new way forward.
