Variolytics is a Fraunhofer spin-off in Stuttgart, founded in 2020. We measure nitrous oxide (N₂O) and other greenhouse gases in the off-gas of the aeration tank — in real time, not only as a factor. N₂O is 273 times more climate-forcing than CO₂ (IPCC AR6), and a signal that nitrogen removal is under stress. EmiCo lite measures N₂O, CH₄, CO₂ and O₂. That feeds the process and the report. From 2027 the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) requires plants of 10,000 p.e. and above to monitor greenhouse gases, including N₂O. How it is counted is not settled yet: analysis, calculations or modelling are allowed. A continuous sensor is the robust path, not the only legal one. More at variolytics.com.
