Utopian Slumps Information

Utopian Slumps operated as a non-profit curator-run gallery in Melbourne, Australia from 2007 to 2009, and as a commercial gallery from 2010 to 2014. The gallery closed in December 2014 and now exists as a consulting agency, managing public art commission and curatorial projects. In its eight years of operation the gallery achieved significant critical acclaim and gained a reputation as one of Australia’s pre-eminent young commercial spaces. Beginning with a stable of nine, the gallery came to represent eighteen early-to-mid-career Australian and New Zealand artists who specialise in emerging and experimental art forms spanning conceptual painting to video and installation. Utopian Slumps has developed and implemented numerous large-scale public art installations and private art projects. Previous projects include production of an editioned series of works with artist Mark Rodda for the Citadines Hotel, Bourke Street, Melbourne; art consultant to Tourism Victoria for their Lost and Found Hotel, 2010 and 2011; the temporary activation of the Docklands Harbour Esplanade, a tender awarded by Places Victoria, 2012-16; consultant to Lend Lease on the tendering process, development and implementation of a major public artwork for Craigieburn Central, 2013-14; and consultant and artist mentor for the inaugural Kisho Prize at Melbourne Central for the GPT Group, 2014. Current projects include consultant to Anna Schwartz Gallery for M Docklands; consultant to Little Projects and Hickory Group on a foyer installation for their Central South Yarra development; consultant to Right Angle Studio on art for the Three Thousand Apartment; consultant to GPT Group on public art and cultural activation for Highpoint shopping centre; and consultant to Neometro and BKK Architects on art projects for their Jewell Station development, Brunswick.
