Lower Merion Township is a First Class Township located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and one of the region’s most vibrant and engaged communities. Founded in 1682 and incorporated as a Township of the First Class in 1900, Lower Merion blends a rich history with forward-thinking local government. The Township operates under a council-manager form of government and is governed by a 14-member Board of Commissioners elected by ward. The Board sets policy and direction for the Township and appoints a professional Township Manager who oversees day-to-day operations and municipal services. Through 12 dedicated departments, Lower Merion Township delivers a wide range of essential services to residents, businesses, and visitors. These include police and fire protection, public works, refuse and recycling, parks and recreation, building and planning services, community development, parking services, public information and media, and access to six public libraries. Spanning nearly 24 square miles and home to more than 58,000 residents, Lower Merion encompasses diverse villages and business districts including Ardmore, Bryn Mawr, Bala Cynwyd, Gladwyne, Wynnewood, and Villanova. The Township maintains over 700 acres of parks, playgrounds, pools, trails, and natural spaces, supporting active, healthy lifestyles year-round. Upper Merion Township is located in southeastern Pennsylvania, about 15 miles from Philadelphia. Over the last five decades, Upper Merion has developed into one of the most important activity centers of the region. The township has approximately 28,000 residents, hosts over 50,000 jobs, and offers over 9.5 million square feet of office space.
