Training, L&D, adult learning....when they resemble watching paint dry, or are force-fed to the audience, they're never effective. Learning can and should be meaningful, rewarding and (gasp!) fun. It shouldn't be dreaded homework assigned to individuals, it should be a shared human experience that benefits the learner and the organization.
