The University of Michigan is a leader in international studies because of our extensive offering of languages and focus in area studies. Language resources at the University of Michigan serve broad constituencies across campus -students in all LSA departments as well as students, faculty and staff of other units on campus. We continue to attract top talent - talent that would have accepted admission elsewhere - because of the number of languages we offer and because our students are trained well to reflect on the world and themselves through the lens of another language and another culture. Students who pursue a second or a third language have deep transcultural and translingual competence - they are able to listen, to communicate, to understand, and to connect with other peoples and other cultures in a way that gains trust. Our language programs prepare students for success in an international marketplace.
