There is growing realisation that private finance is critical to achieving the goal of significantly reducing deforestation. To take advantage of the momentum and interest by the Government of Indonesia, a multi-stakeholder group consisting of UN Environment, World Agroforestry Centre, BNP Paribas and ADM Capital have established the Tropical Landscapes Finance Facility (TLFF) to bring long-term finance to projects and companies that stimulate green growth and improve rural livelihoods. The TLFF was launched by H.E. Darmin Nasution, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Republic of Indonesia on 26 October 2016. This innovative platform, a world’s first, helps Indonesia promote economic development while contributing to achieving its climate targets as stated in its ‘Intended Nationally Determined Contribution’. The core objectives are to scale up investment in renewable energy production, which means that more rural and marginalised communities have access to electricity, and to reduce deforestation and forest degradation by channeling finance to the sustainable production of agricultural commodities that combine enhanced value added of the agricultural sector with improved rural livelihoods and reduced pressure for forest conversion. The TLFF bridges the gap between the government, private sector, communities and international organisations, coordinating cross-functionally to bring about large-scale positive change in Indonesia.
