In the Research Excellence Framework 2014, which measures universities’ research performance, 90% of Birmingham City University’s total submission was judged to have delivered ‘outstanding’ or ‘very considerable’ impact externally. We have been pioneering vocational education in the city since 1843, through a series of predecessor institutions. Having achieved University status in 1992, we changed our name to Birmingham City University in 2007, reflecting our commitment to, and pride in, our home city.

The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts opened in 1996 to forge a new approach to performing arts training. It was co-founded by our Lead Patron Sir Paul McCartney and Mark Featherstone-Witty. and is housed in his old school, which underwent a multi-million pound renovation to transform it into a state-of-the-art performing arts higher education institution. Today LIPA has a reputation for being one of the UK's leading higher education institutions. Many people associate us with Music but we also teach Acting, Applied Theatre and Community Drama, Dance, Filmmaking, Management, Sound Technology and Theatre Performance Design and Technology.

The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, a specialist conservatoire within the University of London, nurtures artists and performers that will lead the way in radically changing communities and global networks. We offer undergraduate, postgraduate, research degrees, and short courses in acting, actor training, applied theatre, theatre crafts and making, design, drama therapy, movement, musical theatre, performance, producing, puppetry, research, scenography, stage management, teacher training, technical arts, voice, and writing. Our special strength, unique in the sector, lies in a combination of first-rate practical training and production, with a highly ranked programme of research - research aimed at the cutting edge of new performance practice. Royal Central undoubtedly has the largest and most diverse faculty of specialist, expert staff and the broadest portfolio of drama, theatre and performance-related programmes in Europe.
