Institutional Legacy and Vision TREC-STEP, established in 1986, is a pioneering Technology Business Incubator in India, committed to promoting innovative, high-tech, high-growth ventures, led by science and technology entrepreneurs. It was founded as the result of a strong collaboration between the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, the Government of Tamil Nadu, Academia, Industry and Financial institutions, coming together to boost Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the country. Over the 4 decades of its existence, TREC-STEP has been recognized as a “Innovation Development Laboratory,” continuously evolving and furthering the boundaries of Innovation through its iteratively developed Incubation service delivery, which strengthens the Entrepreneurial dynamism of its Incubatee Start-ups, which is the core of its success. TREC-STEP has undertaken several ground-breaking Innovation and Incubation initiatives across India, in partnership with the Government of India, the World Bank, the European Union and UN agencies and has emerged as one the most successful, self-sustaining, Incubator, recognized and rewarded by the Government of India and global Incubation Agencies for its pioneering Incubation contributions. TREC-STEP’s extensive portfolio of national and international incubation projects have permeated diverse target groups, successfully incubating and graduating over 400 high-tech, high-growth startups, 2,250 MSMEs supported at the grass roots, 1,450+ women empowered through Entrepreneurship, promoting over 1400 micro-ventures in green, sustainable areas. These efforts have created more than 8,000 jobs and millions of Tax revenues for the Government, besides other environment and social co-benefits. These ventures have significantly contributed to regional development, attracting millions in external funding and generating high Venture revenues, across multiple Industrial sectors.
