Transfernation Information

Transfernation is an on-demand food rescue system built for cities, and powered by transportation infrastructure that already exists in cities. As a society, we are no closer to solving the problem of food waste because the traditional methods that we have been using to tackle it are not keeping up with the problem. Prepared food constitutes 60% of the waste stream that goes to landfill. There is no food rescue system that is robust enough to reach it before it reaches the trash. We do not believe in using free labor to solve a problem that is constantly being created. We believe in cross-sector partnerships: using paid workers, whose job it is to move food (i.e. couriers, catering delivery people, rideshare drivers) to create a system that benefits everyone equally, including the middleman, and is not hinged entirely on goodwill. We believe in bringing in sectors that are not traditionally involved in food rescue and building logistical capacity around them. Food waste can not and will not be eliminated through the efforts of just one sector. Transfernation's iOS app allows institutions hosting events, corporate cafeterias, hospitality to request on-demand pickups for untouched prepared food. The food is picked up by a Transporter and routed to the closest homeless shelter or soup kitchen, where individuals and families who frequent these programs are able to access higher quality food and choices. Both of which are equally important. Working with Transfernation allows corporate food donors to write-off thousands of dollars worth of donated food that would have otherwise been garbage. Our Transporter base (independently contracted couriers, delivery people, and hourly-workers) receive competitive wages to redistribute food donations. And shelters receive a steady stream of high-quality, nutritious food delivered to them, still hot.
