TM Systems comes home to Miami with the purchase of The Kitchen, a state-of-the-art language dubbing hub. Five years ago, The Kitchen was the first to buy what would become TM Systems' Emmy Award-winning film translating and dubbing set-up. Now TM Systems has bought The Kitchen. In a deal cooked up over the past few months, Claxson Interactive Group has sold The Kitchen to TM Systems, which is headed by The Kitchen's former general manager Ken Lorber. He helped establish the Miami facility in 2000. Terms were not disclosed. Lorber said he plans to use The Kitchen as TM's East Coast hub for its new "Global Language Network," which will dub and subtitle films and videos from around the world. "We're going to expand The Kitchen's services beyond Spanish and Portuguese," Lorber said Friday. "The natural evolution of the language translation business has been dramatic. Global distribution of films create more revenue for studios than domestic." Although The Kitchen was bringing in a comfortable revenue stream of about $10 million annually, Ralph Haiek, chief operating officer of Claxson's pay TV division, said the company decided to sell the business in order to concentrate on its pay television interests in Latin America. Claxson will continue as a client of The Kitchen, using it as the transmission center for the channels that it sends out locally. The company also has the option to buy a minority stake in the business in the future. Lorber and The Kitchen have a long history together. It was while setting up The Kitchen that Lorber met Venezuelan translation producer Carlos Contreras, a consultant to the company at the time. Lorber was impressed with Contreras' invention: software that significantly slashed the time needed to translate movies and TV shows by splitting the screen, allowing translators to type in the translation on one side while watching the video, and by numbering each frame.
