Tibet Oral History Project Information

Founded in 2003, the Tibet Oral History Project was established by Marcella Adamski, Ph.D, at the request of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to record the life experiences of Tibetan elders who were forced to flee their homeland following the Chinese invasion of Tibet. His Holiness emphasized the urgency of conducting interviews of these elderly men and women in order to preserve their memories of Tibet's history and culture before the elders passed away - their eyewitness testimonies lost forever. MISSION The goal of the Tibet Oral History Project is to document the life stories of Tibetan elders living in exile, and to disseminate that information through print, broadcast media and the Internet for the purposes of education and preservation of the culture and history of Tibet. ACCOMPLISHMENTS (abridged list) Audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in recognition of the organization's successes to date in preserving Tibet's history and culture, October 2010. The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives thanks the Tibet Oral History Project (TOHP) for its "noble contributions to the preservation of Tibet's history and culture," and agrees to include TOHP's recordings and transcripts of interviews in its collection and to make TOHP's work available to scholars, et. al. Ongoing collaboration with Radio Free Asia to broadcast Tibet Oral History Project interviews with Tibetan elders on Radio Free Asia's program "Life in Exile" to audiences worldwide, including listeners in China.
