The Rienzi Foundation was founded in 2005 to raise awareness, focus attention and increase funding towards the advancement of cochlear implant research and technology. In addition , money raised supports all facets of cochlear implant services from diagnosis to surgery, programming, rehabilitation and outreach. Through the power of Internet technology, medical experts in New York have switched on an inner-ear device, allowing a man in Uganda to hear for the first time in two years. Activating the device from halfway around the world is a first, and highlights a trailblazing way in which the growing realm of telemedicine - conducting medical procedures from remote locations - can enhance the lives of people in struggling nations. My son Michael was 3 years old when he received a Cochlear Implant. I took him to the beach because I wanted him to experience something beautiful, powerful and full of life. The moment that is forever embedded in my soul was seeing his expression upon hearing the ocean and seagulls for the first time. Three and a half years ago Joseph Rienzi, Co-founder of the foundation, brought his son to the NYU Cochlear Implant Center, a leader and pioneer in the field for almost two decades, for cochlear implant surgery and follow-up treatment. The experience had such a profound effect on his childs life that the family felt driven to help other people around the country receive the same gift of sound. After careful planning and diligent research, The Rienzi Foundation for Cochlear Implant Research was officially formed. This March the foundation will host its Launch Gala. To create richer life opportunities for individuals with significant hearing impairment by raising awareness of innovative treatment technologies and funding for groundbreaking research.
