The Pointer Information

The Pointer is a subscription-based digital-only media platform that provides locally-focussed news to communities. It does not feature advertising and relies on the support of subscribers (who pay a monthly fee of $10) to deliver meaningful journalism that includes top quality storytelling, investigations, features and data-driven content. Evidence-based journalism is our focus. The Pointer believes that serious accountability journalism is fundamental to democracy at the local level. It aims to protect taxpayers and other residents in their communities and to help them make key day-to-day decisions in their lives. The Pointer also aims to accurately reflect the communities it serves by telling stories that represent those places. The Pointer’s Journalistic Standards are adapted from those established by the Canadian Association of Journalists. Ownership San Grewal is the founder of The Pointer and a journalist. He has won numerous awards for his investigative work over his 20-year career in journalism. Prior to founding The Pointer he worked for the Toronto Star, where much of his journalism was focused on Peel Region and other parts of the Greater Toronto Area. Prior to that, he launched a national magazine, Diverge, which also received numerous awards during its publication run in the mid-to-late ‘90s. Joel Wittnebel, is an Editor/Journalist with The Pointer who oversees much of the content and the digital production. Joel is an award-winning journalist who, prior to joining The Pointer, ran the entire editorial operation for the Oshawa Express newspaper, including all its online platforms. The Pointer also employs a small staff of editors, photographers and reporters, and uses freelance contributors. There is no outside ownership of The Pointer. Nobody (no individual, group, business interest, company or political entity) outside the company has equity in The Pointer Group Inc.
