The Outside Foundation (TOF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit founded in 2014. The Foundation strives for its mission - to get kids outside and protect and preserve our local environment - through programs and advocacy. To facilitate access to the outdoors for all kids, TOF organizes and provides scholarships for the “Kids in Kayaks” program, which provides an opportunity for every Beaufort County 7th grader to go kayaking and explore the local salt marshes during a regular school day. In 2024/25 TOF hosted over 1100 students for the program in Hilton Head, Bluffton, and St Helena Island. In 2018 TOF established the Oyster Shell Recycling and Reef Building Initiative which has created an oyster recycling drop off location, captured over 165 tons of oyster shell, and built 27 new reefs along our local shorelines. An oyster shell recycling route, volunteer oyster baggings, and reef building are supported and organized by TOF in partnership with the SC Department of Natural Resources. Additional Foundation activities include beach and waterway clean-ups, #EARTHDAYHHI, and our annual Keep the Broad Creek Clean Water Festival - an annual educational fair for families!
