The Institute started as the Harefield Transplant Trust in 1980 to fund and support the innovative transplant programme at Harefield Hospital. The Transplant programme became the largest in the world and the Harefield Transplant Trust evolved into a base to support research into the causes, mechanisms and treatment of heart disease, as well as global medicine. This work continues at the Institute and is now called The Magdi Yacoub Institute
