The Learning Carpet Information

The Learning Carpet is a company that cares about each child achieving success! This women-owned company provides learning tools and professional learning opportunities in literacy and mathematics for teachers PreK-5. The Learning Carpet, a permanently gridded, 100 square floor mat provides the structure for students to actively engage to explore and construct, test and retest, refine and extend individual understanding of critical mathematical and literacy content. The cards and other accessories are specifically designed to build and link conceptual understanding of concepts to numeric and alphabetic principles, resulting in an increased depth of knowledge of foundational content. The Learning Carpet promotes inquiry and collaboration as students tackle challenges in whole-group, small groups, or individually. Our goal at The Learning Carpet is simple: help each student learn and achieve! The owner, Lana Hansen, is a life-long learner who is passionate about making math make sense for her students and colleagues. She taught grades 1, 2, 4, and 5 in Colorado and Wyoming public elementary schools in a career that spanned 28 years. In 2006, she obtained National Board Certification in Literacy: Reading-Language Arts/Early and Middle Childhood. In 2008, she was granted the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching for the state of Colorado. Now she works with teachers (PreK-6) to increase professional knowledge of foundational mathematics, linking standards to specific student behaviors that signal a depth of knowledge. She connects the professional knowledge into instructional actions that encourage each student to advance as a thinker and mathematician. Her goal is to inspire each teacher to better understand the principles and the instructional actions that make a difference. Her engaging manner encourages each teacher to grow both as a mathematician and a teacher of mathematics.
