The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment Information

As of December 2013, The Heinz Center has closed permanently. ------------------------------------------------ The Heinz Center was a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that seeks to revive bipartisan environmentalism in the U.S. We seek to do this by providing impartial science to policy and decision makers and facilitating dialogue among a diverse group of stakeholders. Since its inception, the Heinz Center has had a number of important successes in bringing science to policy. They include: -- Publication of the seminal "State of The Nation's Ecosystems" reports, the authoritative reference for national and regional policymakers and resource managers on the conditions and uses of ecosystems in the United States. -- Development and dissemination of land-use strategies that would simultaneously moderate climate change and protect forests. -- Documentation of the carbon-sequestration capacities of agricultural lands. -- Early discussions of the then-emerging science of ocean acidification, with consequent high impact on foundations and non-governmental organizations. -- Organization of the Arctic Governance Project, a broad effort to codify and make available all laws, regulations, policies, and political forums pertinent to the circumpolar Arctic. Subsequent development of consensus recommendations to governments. -- Creation and distribution of a primer on dam removal strategies that minimize disruptions of wildlife and ecosystems.
