BOYS AND GIRLS LEARN DIFFERENTLY… and understanding these differences, then learning and implementing gender-friendly strategies, has been proven to make a positive difference in the academic and behavioral lives of both. For this reason, the Gurian Institute provides teachers, parents, and others involved in the successful growth of children, the strategies and tools required to provide proactive gender-based instruction designed to increase the engagement of both genders, improve teacher effectiveness, demonstrate best-practices for literacy and STEM, decrease academic and behavior-related gender gaps, understand and manage relational aggression among girls, and increase social and emotional skills among boys to reduce bullying. All of this allows both genders to thrive and teachers to spend more time teaching and less time managing classroom or behavior issues. One of the main differences between the sexes is that boys tend to be more readily and deeply engaged, and experience greater and more frequent success when given challenges coupled with active lessons and relevant topics. Girls, on the other hand, tend to thrive and find more success and self-confidence when lessons have a relational component and they can collaborate on projects and discuss what they are learning. What the Gurian Institute’s unique brain-based instruction has shown over and over is that both genders thrive within their individual learning “comfort zone” and then are able to be encouraged to stretch into less familiar areas so they can build their abilities there as well.
