The idea of establishing The Children’s Heart Fund of Ethiopia was conceived in Dr. Belay Abegaz’s (Founder) mind while he was following his specialty training in the USA. After his return to Ethiopia, he shared the idea of establishing a cardiac hospital for children with those whom he felt had a good heart and would have a passion to support such a project. Then CHFE was then established in 1989 G.C. as a non-governmental, non-profit humanitarian organization committed to helping children with cardiac diseases. The hospital does not charge and still not charging for any of its services! From its inception, the idea was to set out clearly defined short, medium, and long-term objectives. In its short and mid-term objectives, CHFE was able to provide heart surgery/intervention for more than 2,200 children. This was provided initially outside the country & later by inviting medical missions to Ethiopia to carry out treatments locally. CHFE believes a commendable job has been done with regards to its short and mid-term objectives. In 2009 CHFE embarked on its long-term objectives to establish a sustainable cardiac center. This project had the following components: - • Building a hospital (Done in 2009 G.C.) • Equipping it (Done) • Ensuring adequate local manpower is developed in different disciplines of cardiology (Done) and • Ensuring the sustainability of the center
