The Railway Inn offers a genuine Somerset welcome to visitors with a warm, home from home and contemporary atmosphere. The pub has undergone a complete transformation over recent months. As well as its cosy informal area in the front, furnished with leather chairs and barrel tables, and its traditional style bar ingeniously incorporating apple ladders, there is a spacious 62 seat restaurant to the rear, light and airy overlooking the garden and patio area. The front façade of the pub remains as it always has been, something Thatchers has been keen to retain as a reminder of the pub's long 140 year tradition in Sandford. The original railway signals from the old Sandford railway line take pride of place outside, together with two authentic oak vats, now housing the cycle racks. Inside, the Railway Inn has been thoughtfully decorated with artefacts and pictures reflecting the cidermaking heritage of Thatchers. Keen to represent local craftsmanship at its best, the bar and restaurant have been given extra special interest with hand carvings in English oak describing the story of the cidermaking year. The bar has been fully stocked with a full range of Thatchers bottled and draught ciders, as well as spirits, beers, ales and lagers. The wine list has been selected by Kelli Coxhead of The Wine Shop in Winscombe. Thatchers has brought in experienced general manager Warren Zilch to run the gastro pub. He says, "We want to make a visit to The Railway very special. There's been a lot of planning behind the scenes, and we know the opening has been widely anticipated. It's a great feeling to be up and running. If you are looking to eat at The Railway Inn, you can choose from pub classics and bar specials as well as new signature dishes for the restaurant created by head chef Matthew Hampshire. All of the food prepared at The Railway features regional and seasonal ingredients from local producers, with a strong emphasis on great quality, great taste and sensible prices. Matthew says, "Using seasonal ingredients with respect is something I'm passionate about, as is using locally sourced produce. We've teamed up with some wonderful producers in and around Somerset, many on our doorstep, who we are working with for The Railway Inn menu. So you'll find free range meat from Blagdon Butchers, fresh vegetables from The Ethicurean, and local cheeses from Lye Cross, just as an example." Outside there are newly landscaped gardens and terracing, outdoor seating, together with a children's play area. There's ample parking for cars and bicycles. As part of Thatchers emphasis on sustainability, energy for the heating and hot water at the Railway Inn is provided by the company's own biomass boiler, which is fuelled by prunings from the orchards. Martin Thatcher adds, "It's such a pleasure to be open and welcoming guests.
