The Baytree Centre Information

The Baytree Centre is an education and social inclusion charity for women and girls in Brixton, south London. We grew out of the aftermath of the 1981 Brixton uprisings, when local women asked for somewhere to learn. More than thirty years on, we support over 1,200 women, girls and families a year. We combine education with sustained one-to-one relationships — accredited English and literacy, social mobility coaching, welfare and housing advice for women; mentoring, life skills and careers programmes for girls aged 7–20. What makes it work is time: we stay with people over years rather than terms. Last year 97% of our learners passed accredited English exams, 95% of women reported increased confidence and agency, and 97% of girls raised their aspirations. 371 volunteers gave 9,663 hours. We work in partnership — with Lambeth Council, local consortia including Ecosystem Coldharbour, and companies bringing skills-based volunteering, mentoring and funding.
