Even the best companies experience disputes from time-to-time. All employers are legally obliged to have procedures through which disputes may be processed. Disputes in the workplace can include allegations of affronts to Dignity at Work; discrimination on any of the ‘nine grounds’ prohibited by law; Interpersonal conflicts arising from any of a myriad of causes; feelings of unfair treatment; or unreasonable behaviour. Mediation is often an option outlined in company procedures. However, even where it’s not, Mediation can usually be introduced as a quick and effective method of dispute resolution. In 2021, the Workplace Relations Commission published a Code of Practice on the management of bullying allegations. The Code strongly advocates for an informal approach to resolution - rather than a formal investigation. Mediation is a potent method of dispute resolution.
