This dynamic congregation affiliated with the Reform Movement values lifelong Jewish learning, a warm spirit of community, a sense of inclusiveness, and active participation in Jewish life. We believe that full participation from a diverse and broad-based membership benefits our congregation, and therefore welcome all who wish to participate, regardless of age, marital status, sexual orientation, or financial means.
Temple Emanu-El is a vibrant Reform Jewish community that strives to be a place of sacred encounter. It is a place where learning, prayer and deeds change people’s understanding of themselves, of their world and their responsibilities in it.
At Temple Emanu-El, the creation of a vibrant and meaningful community is both an enduring value and an ongoing endeavor. For us, community means a sense of warm welcome, meaningful relationships, and mutual responsibility. We affirm a sense of both valued boundaries and a great respect for diversity. We celebrate our identity as a multi-generational community. We envision the relationship between congregants, rabbis and staff as a partnership based upon mutual respect, shared Jewish commitment, and ongoing Jewish growth. That relationship is manifest in a governance structure which is democratic and reflects the diversity of our congregation.
Our synagogue's history is nearly as old as Dallas itself, founded in 1875 as the first Jewish congregation in North Texas. Though our location has changed a few times, we found our final home at the corner of Hillcrest and Northwest Highway in 1957 and completed a $38 million dollar expansion and renovation in 2016. Our spaces were reimagined and redesigned to put interaction at the forefront: interaction with nature, interaction with each other and interaction with God.
We welcome over 2,500 families with diverse backgrounds and lifestyles through our doors and help them find their Jewish path through prayer, music, learning, food and community.
Since our founding in 1825, B’nai Jeshurun (BJ) has been at the forefront of the American Jewish experience. As we approach our third century, our vision is focused on the spiritual work of transformation and on the creation of a Jewish path that is authentic, profound, and helps all members of our community seek and live their purpose to the fullest. Our spiritual leaders and our approximately 1,800 member households share a vision of a diverse, dynamic, and welcoming community that offers many paths to Jewish religious life.
Our unfolding vision for life after the pandemic imagines a dynamic mix of in-person and virtual prayer, learning, and programming that is accessible to all seekers wherever they are. As such, our staffing model is evolving to build and deliver this unique offering with excellence and care.
B’nai Jeshurun is committed to creating a staff culture and congregational community that is accessible, inclusive, and equitable. In particular, we have been on a journey over the past several years to understand the history and impact of racism in America, within the American Jewish community, and within the BJ congregation and staff in particular. We seek to build a community and staff that reflects and celebrates the diversity of America, as well as of the Jewish community, and are looking for team members who want to be part of our ongoing learning, and to contribute to it.
