Entreprise mutualiste, la Matmut est créée à Rouen en 1961. Son Président fondateur est Paul Bennetot. En 1993, Daniel Havis succède à Paul Bennetot et occupe la fonction de PDG à partir de 1994. La Matmut filialise ses activités en 2006, avec notamment la création de Matmut Vie. Historiquement proche de l’univers de la santé, le Groupe lance en 2010 son premier contrat d’assurance complémentaire santé. Le mode de gouvernance du Groupe Matmut évolue en 2015. Daniel Havis assure la Présidence, tandis que Nicolas Gomart est nommé Directeur Général. La SGAM Matmut regroupe désormais les structures suivantes : Matmut SAM, Matmut Mutualité, Ociane Matmut, AMF SAM, Mutlog, Mutlog Garanties et Mgéfi. Avec 4,6 millions de sociétaires et 8,9 millions de contrats en portefeuille (2025), le Groupe Matmut est aujourd’hui un acteur majeur sur le marché français de l’assurance. Le Groupe, dont Christophe Bourret est aujourd'hui le Président et dont Nicolas Gomart est le Vice-président et le Directeur général, compte 6 800 collaborateurs et son Siège social est basé à Rouen, en Seine-Maritime. La SGAM Matmut a réalisé un chiffre d’affaires de 3,2 milliards d’euros en 2024. Le Groupe Matmut est doté d'un plan stratégique "Objectif Impact" – 2024/2026, articulé autour de la notion de durabilité. Sa politique RSE s'articule autour de 3 piliers : l'environnement, l'inclusion/l'accessibilité et la santé/le bien-être. En 2025, le Groupe Matmut procède au rachat de HSBC Assurances Vie (France), qui devient KOREGE.
