CHP, Büyük Önder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk öncülüğünde, 9 Eylül 1923’te önce “Halk Fırkası” adıyla kurulmuştur, 1924 yılında “Cumhuriyet Halk Fırkası”, 1935 yılında ise “Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi” adını almıştır. 1927 yılında; “Cumhuriyetçilik”, “Halkçılık”, “Milliyetçilik” ve “Laiklik” CHP’nin dört temel ilkesi olarak benimsenmiştir, 1935 yılında, “Devletçilik” ve “Devrimcilik” ilkeleri de eklenerek, partinin ilkeleri altıya çıkarılmıştır. Partinin amblemi olan 6 ok bu ilkeleri simgelemektedir. CHP, kurucusu ve ilk Genel Başkanı Atatürk’ün önderliğinde ulusal bağımsızlığı kazanan, Cumhuriyeti kuran, saltanatı kaldıran, hilafete son veren ve ulusal birliği sağlayan partidir. Hukuk ve eğitim gibi toplumsal alanlarda gerçekleştirdiği reformlarla çağdaş Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’ni biçimlendirmiştir. Ulusal sanayinin ve ekonominin gelişmesine öncülük etmiştir. İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında, tek parti konumunun tüm olanaklarına karşın, çok partili rejime geçişi sağlayarak Türkiye’nin demokratikleşme sürecinde de öncü misyonunu sürdürmüştür.
