The company began farming in 1986 in the beautiful Huon River. Initially owned by Peter and Frances Bender, it began as a diversification to their family cattle and sheep farming enterprises but soon grew into a highly successful business - part of Australia's largest fishery by value. The business is now owned by JBS and currently employs over 800 people around the country (2022) across a wide variety of disciplines, producing 38,000 tonnes of salmon and ocean trout every year.
The FRDC is widely recognised as the leading Australian agency concerned with planning, funding and managing fisheries research and development.
The FRDC does not undertake research itself; rather it identifies research and development needs - and the means of addressing them - through a planning process and by contracting with research providers.
Stakeholders in the FRDC are the fishing industry; the governments of the Commonwealth, the states and the territories; and the people of Australia.
The FRDC acknowledge Australia’s Indigenous People who are the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia and recognises their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respect to their Elders both past and present and extend that respect to all Indigenous People.
