TANN is a local community group of residents living in and around the Avenues area off Ullet Road, close to Sefton Park in South Liverpool, part of L17. We aim to:work as a neighbourhood watch group supporting local policinggive a collective voice to local people on issues of interest and concernbring local residents together socially and to strengthen our communityKnown as 'The Avenues' this is a well defined residential area in South Liverpool, with borders shaped by Sefton Park, Smithdown Road, Arundel Avenue and Hartington Road. We share the L17 post code with our neighbours in St. Michael's in the Hamlet across Sefton Park. Most of TANN is now a Conservation Area because of the historic architecture of its Victorian housing and street designs. These have largely been preserved by local residents and support the city's strong architectural heritage. TANN includes the shops along Smithdown Road and works to promote buying local and using local services. Some of the traders and people providing local services are listed in a searchable directory. In Liverpool City of Architecture Quentin Hughes lists the three churches which are situated within the Avenues area. The Anglican church of St. Agnes's and St Pancras, the vicarage which stands next to it, the Unitarian Church on Ullet Road, and the Roman Catholic Church of St. Clare's on Arundel Avenue. These buildings all date from 1883 to 1902, and most of the housing in the area dates from, and is in keeping with, that era. St Clare's Parish Hall alongside its Catholic Church (entrance on Rutland Avenue) is an active licensed social venue with a small garden, where most of our TANN community events take place. Other historic buildings are the former Mary Clark Home and Holt House - a grade II listed building - both on Ullet Road and now refurbished as apartments. St Agnes Field along Ullet Road, is our well used local greenspace leading into Sefton Park. TANN ran a successful campaign to secure funds for a children's play area here which we designed in partnership with Liverpool City Council. Sefton Park is about to have its own play area in 2008/9 by the cafe as part of its Heritage Lottery funded restoration. Click here for a short history of Sefton Park. The area was built from 1870 onwards, and consists mostly of larger terrace and semi-detached houses, with solid walls and traditional slate roofs. In 2010, it is planned to include a Houses section on this website, with information on building maintenance and methods of energy conservation as well as architecture and green spaces. For those interestd in energy conservation, a document from the Energy Saving Trust has been included below.
