SynesthASIA Charity Fashion Show was founded in 2008 by four McGill students who were inspired by an artistic movement centered on the experience of "synesthesia,” a neurological condition of joined perception. In the synesthetic experience, the stimulation of one sense triggers the sensation of another, such as a musical note producing the visualization of the colour blue. The name of the event, "SynesthASIA," is a play on words to describe the artistic vision of the founding show, where fashion from local designers such as Montreal Fashion Week’s Dinh Ba Design, Travis Taddeo, Anomal Couture, and Valérie Dumaine were interwoven with striking cultural elements that spanned the vast continent of Asia. In 2012, SynesthASIA will surprise Montreal with an art piece that goes beyond fashion to one of mixed media performance, an experiential show that truly embarks on the synesthetic experience. Combining art, food, and technology, and collaborating with local fashion designers, architects, filmmakers, graphic designers, and even food scientists, SynesthASIA 2012 promises to immerse the audience in a four-dimensional world of cross-wired senses. To date, Synesthasia has attracted an average annual audience of 900 people and has raised $25,000 for charity.
