Syncrosoft was a German company that specialized in advanced software and hardware-based DRM solutions, primarily targeting industries like music and media production. Though the company no longer exists, its innovations in software protection have left a lasting impact. Two of Syncrosoft's main technologies were eLicenser and MCFACT, each serving unique roles in securing software. 1. eLicenser The eLicenser was a hardware-based USB dongle designed to prevent unauthorized access to licensed software. By requiring users to plug in the physical device to authenticate, eLicenser effectively reduced piracy, ensuring that only verified users could access protected software. This tool became a trusted DRM standard, widely adopted by software providers like Steinberg and Vienna Symphonic Library. 2. MCFACT (Multi-Channel Finite Automata Code Transformation) MCFACT was one of the earliest applications of white-box cryptography, a novel approach at the time. Unlike traditional cryptography, which aims to hide keys, MCFACT was built to secure the software’s executable code itself, protecting it even in exposed environments where users could potentially reverse-engineer the application. By transforming code into multiple encrypted channels and using finite automata to control access, MCFACT resisted tampering and reverse engineering, establishing a new frontier in DRM technology. Together, eLicenser and MCFACT positioned Syncrosoft as an early leader in the development of robust DRM solutions, blending hardware and white-box cryptographic techniques to secure software in both physical and digital spaces.
